Candle Burning Tips

Candle burning tips

Do you have one or even many types of candles in your home?
Research by candle manufacturers as show that at least seven out of ten American households use candles, and more than 90% plus of these candles are purchased by women.

Check out these candle burning tips to get the most out of your candles:

1. Trim the wick as often as possible

One of the first things that you can do with your candles is to make sure you keep the wick trimmed to a ¼ of an inch in length. If the wick is aloud to get larger than a ¼ of an inch there will be a tendency for it to burn faster and smoke. If you are noticing black soot accumulating on your container candles, the wick is probably far too long. .

2. Put your candles in the refrigerator:

Did you know that candles which are cold will burn slower. The technique to cool your candle, is too first wrap it in foil or cling wrap to prevent the wick from absorbing any moisture. Pop them in the fridge for about an hour and light! However make sure you don’t put them in the freezer instead. Because they will break!

3. Avoid placing the candle in a drafty position

Placing candles in drafty areas can cause uneven burning and excessive smoking. Not to mention that your candle will burn very much faster. If you notice that the candle flame is flickering in any direction other than straight up, then there is a draft. Prevent your candles being effected by drafts by keeping burning candles away from heating and air-conditioning vents as well as open windows.

4. Burn the candles longer

Especially, for pillar candles, make sure you burn them for at least one hour for every inch in diameter. If you skip this step, you will end up burning a tunnel through your candle!

5. Always put out the flame

A candle snuffer works best to blow out the candle. If you don’t have a candle snuffer readily available, you can blow out the candle by placing an index finger in front of the flame and blowing gently. This causes the air to surround the flame and minimizes splattering of hot wax from the wax pool.

6. Safety first

Always try and keep all lit candles out of the reach of pets and children. Never leave a burning candle unattended. And always burn candles in a well-ventilated room.

7. CPSC Bans Candles With Lead-Cored Wicks WASHINGTON, D.C.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously to ban the manufacture and sale of lead-cored wicks and candles with lead-cored wicks. CPSC determined that candles using lead-cored wicks could present a lead poisoning hazard to young children. The federal ban, which applies to all domestic and imported candles, should deter manufacturers from making non-conforming wicks.

Note: When purchasing make sure the wicks don't have lead in them

Tip: If wax has spilled on the carpet for any reason, the best way to remove it is with paper and an iron. Place a paper towel or brown grocery bag over the spot. Place the heated iron over the paper towel. The heat from the iron will cause the wax to melt and be absorbed into the paper towel.
